Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is a critical element in the lean implementation process. Its purpose is to guide an organization towards the discovery of hidden waste within its processes. If an organization does not use Value Stream Mapping, it will have to rely on opinion to determine where it needs focus its value resources i.e. people, time, etc. to improve its processes.
Value Stream Mapping removes the opinion based decision making and incorporates real time data to see the problem area and where the waste is being created. The identification and elimination of waste is the primary goal of any lean implementation, no matter what the industry may be. Value Stream Mapping can be uses by any type of organization such as, manufacturing, education, healthcare, government, service, etc.
